Atlantic Timeline is an ongoing column where we highlight some of the most exciting moments from Atlantic Records artists' musical legacy. This installment covers 1965.
SOLOMON BURKE receives his first #1 with “Got To Get You Off My Mind,” which ascends to the top of the R&B chart in January.
WILSON PICKETT’s “In The Midnight Hour” enjoys a 23-week stay on the R&B chart, ultimately peaking at #1.
OTIS REDDING has his first top 10 R&B hit with “Mr. Pitiful,” and then follows up with “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” which reaches #2 R&B.
SONNY AND CHER become international superstars with the #1 smash, “I Got You Babe.” The album Look At Us also goes to #1 in the U.S., while Sonny’s solo single, “Laugh At Me,” becomes a top 20 hit.
Staff producer BERT BERNS teams with AHMET ERTEGUN, NESUHI ERTEGUN, and GERALD (JERRY) WEXLER to create Bang Records. Bang produces a string of hit singles – including THE STRANGELOVES’ “I Want Candy,” THE MCCOYS’ “Hang On Sloopy,” VAN MORRISON’s “Brown Eyed Girl,” and NEIL DIAMOND’s “Cherry Cherry” – before Berns’ sudden death two years later.
