Atlantic Timeline - 1978

Atlantic Timeline is an ongoing column where we highlight some of the most exciting moments from Atlantic Records artists' musical legacy. This installment covers 1978.

THE BLUES BROTHERS first perform on the April 22nd installment of Saturday Night Live. Fronted by JOHN BELUSHI and DAN AYKROYD as JAKE & ELWOOD BLUES, the all-star band – which includes Stax heroes STEVE CROPPER and DONALD ‘DUCK’ DUNN – releases its chart-topping, double-platinum debut, Briefcase Full Of Blues, in December.

In April, GENESIS – now a trio following the departure of guitarist STEVE HACKETT – release the platinum-certified And Then There Were Three..., which features the pop hit, “Follow You, Follow Me.”

THE ROLLING STONES’ Some Girls is released in June. The set – which features the #1 single, “Miss You” – sees the Stones reinvigorated by the new sounds of punk rock and disco, as well as by the addition of guitarist RON WOOD.

MICK JAGGER and KEITH RICHARDS also find time to guest on reggae legend PETER TOSH’s Bush Doctor – the first non-Rolling Stones record on Rolling Stones Records.

In June, FOREIGNER release their second album, Double Vision, which includes the top 3 hits, “Double Vision” and “Hot Blooded.”

That same month sees PETER GABRIEL quickly following up on his self-titled solo debut with an eponymous second album, this time produced by ROBERT FRIPP.

Brit rocker DAVE EDMUNDS releases Tracks On Wax 4 via Swan Song, marking the first album to feature all four members of the legendary ROCKPILE – Edmunds, NICK LOWE, BILLY BREMNER, and TERRY WILLIAMS.

CHIC officially becomes the world’s preeminent disco group with their second LP, C’est Chic. Released in August, the platinum-certified collection includes the genre-defining #1 classic, “Le Freak.” The single sells more than six million copies in the U.S. alone – becoming Atlantic’s best-selling single ever.
