Shinedown Reveals Album Cover & Preorder Available Now On iTunes!

Nikon and Warner Team Up to Rock SXSW

Nikon Inc. and Warner Music Group are uniting to host a star-studded residency at the upcoming South by Southwest® Music & Media Conference (SXSW®) in Austin, Texas. “The Warner Sound Captured by Nikon” will make its home at Austin’s famed La Zona Rosa, with two days and three nights of showcase performances slated for March 13th through 15th.

Artists from Atlantic Records, Warner Bros. Records and other WMG labels will appear live at these official SXSW showcases; all SXSW badge-holders are welcome. Among the artists will be such acclaimed acts as Santigold, B.o.B Wale & Meek Mill, fun., and Gary Clark, Jr. – a full line-up will be announced shortly.

WMG and Nikon are also teaming up to search for the next great music superstar via the “Your 1 Shot” contest. Bands/artists are invited to submit one live performance video to the “Your 1 Shot” contest site, located at http://www.talenthouse.com/nikon-perform-at-sxsw. One winner, courtesy of Nikon 1, will be selected by a stellar panel of music industry experts, including A&R executives from both Atlantic Records and Warner Bros. Records.

The winning artist or band will be brought in to Austin for a Wednesday, March 14th live performance at “The Warner Sound Captured by Nikon.” Artists’ submissions will be accepted through Monday, February 20th at 10 a.m. PST, with online voting set to run from February 21st through February 27th. The “Your 1 Shot” winner is scheduled to be announced on Tuesday, March 6th.

30th Anniversary of The J. Geils Band's #1 Album "Freeze Frame"

Hailing from Boston, The J Geils Band went from regionally successful club act to one of the most popular live bands of the '70s. After 14 years on the road and 11 albums the # 1 Billboard single "Centerfold" gave the band its just reward, a HIT album. Peter Wolf reminisces to In the Studio host Redbeard about what fueled The J Geils Band for all those years and how it felt to finally be on top:

"One of the things about the Geils Band, we really weren't that ambitious about having a zillion seller or something. We never really went into rock'n'roll to make money, we went into rock'n'roll so maybe we didn't have to work 9 to 5. It was probably the happiest time in my life, because we were doing tours where every place was sold out and thatʼs a performers dream... All the touring, all the one nighters and all the driving in station wagons and sleeping in funky hotels and funky dressing rooms, finally, there was a certain sense of respect coming back to the band."

This morning Death Cab For Cutie announced a very special 2012 North American tour. This one-of-a-kind spring trek will see DCFC accompanied on stage by members of San Francisco’s celebrated Magik*Magik Orchestra. The dates begin April 10th in Denver, CO at Ellie Caulkins Opera House and finish up May 13th in Seattle, WA’s Paramount Theatre.

Pre-sale will begin for the band’s official fan club, DCFC Union Local #1138, on Friday, January 20th at 12pm local venue time. This pre-sale includes regular pre-sale tickets and a limited number of DCFC t-shirt and poster bundles.

Ed Sheeran to Support Snow Patrol on Tour

Elektra recording artist Ed Sheeran has announced details of his upcoming North American tour. The eagerly awaited dates – which see the acclaimed British singer/songwriter traveling as special guest on Snow Patrol’s 2012 North American Tour – get underway March 29th at Orlando, Florida’s Hard Rock Live and then continue through mid-May.

In addition, Sheeran has slated a series of high profile showcase performances, including a pair of sold out shows at New York's famed Mercury Lounge on January 30th and 31st as well as a February 2nd date at Los Angeles’ Hotel Café.

1985 Another landmark year for PHIL COLLINS: January sees his third solo album, No Jacket Required, go straight to #1. It later wins the Grammy for ‘Album of the Year,’ selling over 12 million copies to earn one of the RIAA’s rare Diamond Awards. The album includes two #1 singles in “Sussudio” and “One More Night,” plus two further top 10 successes, “Don’t Lose My Number” and “Take Me Home.”

On July 13th, COLLINS is among the top stars at the international famine relief benefit concert, Live Aid – and thanks to the Concorde, the only artist to perform at both Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Along with his own set at both venues, he also plays drums for ERIC CLAPTON and a reunited LED ZEPPELIN in Philly.

PHIL COLLINS’ bandmate MIKE RUTHERFORD also has a banner year, releasing the self-titled, gold-certified debut from his MIKE + THE MECHANICS in October. It features the top 10 singles, “Silent Running” and “All I Need Is A Miracle.”

In March, LA’s RATT break out with their top 10 Atlantic debut, Out Of The Cellar.

Released in May, TWISTED SISTER’s Stay Hungry – featuring the headbanging anthems “We’re Not Gonna To Take It” and “I Wanna Rock” – is deemed obscene by the Parents Music Resource Center. It sells over three million copies.

Jupiter Jonn meets B.o.B. in NYC

Greetings earthlings. This is Jupiter Jonn, intergalactic music fan, here to talk about the B.o.B. show that I was lucky enough to catch last week in New York City, NY, USA, Earth. I hadn’t been in this neck of the galaxy for a while so I of course was totally pumped to be in the city, none-the-less to see my man B.o.B. do his thing. Fresh out of the saucer, I cruised around Central Park for a while, but couldn’t help staring up at the Strange Clouds all day. Bobby Ray definitely had arrived in the city and brought with him that intergalactic s*%t!

I then made my way downtown to the Bowery Ballroom and met up with the @atlanticrecords crew who always show me that earthly hospitality! At 8:00pm the crowd filled the ballroom and everybody was showing @JupiterJonn tons of love and taking pictures with me. Newly signed Atlantic singer/songwriter Lauriana Mae took the stage first and blew me away for my first time hearing her! I have never seen a more beautiful human lady, with such a timeless voice that hasn’t graced the interstellar radio waves for years. I picked up a copy of her new EP, Love Mae and am going to burn it for all the homies back on Mars, no doubt. When B.o.B. took center stage, he stepped right up and owned it. He had a supporting band and three female back-up singers with him that created a nice, authentic sound to compliment the extraterrestrial beats that I live for. I danced around like crazy down on the floor and watched as B.o.B. played some acoustic guitar, threw down nasty acappella freestyle verses, and had the audience fully bumping. When the beat for the new single, “Strange Clouds” came on the place erupted and was purely electric. In the madness B.o.B. reached out his hand E.T.-style and gave Jupiter Jonn a shout-out! What?! I was so happy just to see my ATLien brother, B.o.B. going off that I couldn’t even contain myself. Then onstage came the king, T.I. and the place went through the roof! The show was easily the highlight of the music universe last week!

Oh yeah, and I even got to meet my hero, B.o.B. backstage after the show.

Grammy Award Nominations

The nominations for the 54th annual Grammy Awards was released last night during a televised ceremony and we're proud to announce that the Atlantic Records roster dominated the night in nearly every category including Album Of The Year and Best New Artist!

Bruno Mars was nominated for a whopping six Grammys: His song "Grenade" was nominated for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance while his album Doo-Wops & Hooligans was nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. He even snagged a nomination for Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical as a member of the Smeezingtons.

Dubstep phenom Skrillex was another big success and he came away with a nomination for Best New Artist. His EP Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites also got nods for Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica Album while "First Of The Year (Equinox)" was nominated for Best Short Form Music Video and "Cinema (Skrillex Remix)" will be represented in the Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical category.

The incomparable Cee Lo Green also landed four nominations: The Lady Killer is up for Best Pop Vocal Album while "Fool For You" is up for Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best R&B song. Additionally Green earned a nomination for album of the year for being featured on Mars' breakthrough disc Doo-Wops & Hooligans!

In the hip-hop world Lupe Fiasco's song "The Show Goes On" was nominated for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and his album Lasers is also up for Best Rap Album. We're proud to add that he's going to have some friendly competition with Wiz Khalifa whose anthem "Black And Yellow" was nominated for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap song, too

Other Atlantic and Atlantic-affiliated nominations include Death Cab For Cutie whose latest full-length Codes And Keys was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album; Zac Brown, who gained a nod for Best Song Written For Visual Media for the track "Where The River Goes" from Footlose; Dream Theater and Megadeth, who were nominated for Best Rock/Metal Performance for their songs "On The Backs Of Angels" and "Public Enemy No. 1" respectively; and, finally, there was a nod to Boardwalk Empire: Volume 1 for Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media.

We'd like to congratulate all of these acts on their success and we have a feeling we're going to need a bigger office for all the awards our artists will be taking home when the Grammy Awards air on CBS on February 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

A busy year for PHIL COLLINS – In June, GENESIS releases Three Sides Live, a mostly-live double-LP which includes one side of studio material, including the top 40 hit, “Paperlate” (featuring the EARTH, WIND & FIRE horn section).

That same month, ROBERT PLANT makes his solo debut with the top 5 Pictures At Eleven, featuring none other than PHIL COLLINS on drums.

September sees the release of former ABBA vocalist ANNI-FRID “Frida” LYNGSTAD’s first English language solo venture, Something’s Going On, produced by PHIL COLLINS.

On October 2nd, PETER GABRIEL reunites with GENESIS for ‘Six of the Best: A Benefit For WOMAD’ at London’s Milton Keynes Concert Bowl. The one-time-only reunion – which also sees erstwhile guitarist STEVE HACKETT joining in on the encore rendition of “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)” – was conceived by GENESIS manager Tony Smith as a way to help GABRIEL offset losses from his initial WOMAD (World of Music Arts and Dance) Festival earlier that year.

Last, but most certainly not least, PHIL releases his second solo outing, Hello, I Must Be Going!, in November. The triple-platinum collection is highlighted by the top 10 cover of THE SUPREMES’ “You Can’t Hurry Love.”

Also in November, LED ZEPPELIN’s Coda, a compilation of previously unreleased tracks assembled by JIMMY PAGE, charts at #6 and earns RIAA platinum status.

Singer LAURA BRANIGAN’s platinum-selling single, “Gloria,” proves a worldwide hit, while also spending a record-setting 36 weeks on Billboard’s ‘Hot 100.’

On February 19th, AC/DC vocalist Bon Scott is found dead in London after a night of heavy drinking. The group considers disbanding, but ultimately opts to carry on, with BRIAN JOHNSON brought in as lead singer. In August, AC/DC release Back In Black, a hard rock landmark which goes on to 22x-platinum status in the U.S., with total worldwide sales in excess of 42 million.

GENESIS begins its domination of the decade with the March release of the platinum-certified Duke, which includes the top 15 hit, “Misunderstanding.” Watch it below.

The title track from BETTE MIDLER’s 1979 film, The Rose, climbs to #3 on the ‘Hot 100,’ later winning the Divine Miss M a Grammy for ‘Best Vocal Performance.’

PETE TOWNSHEND signs with Atco and releases his label debut, Empty Glass, in April. The set – which includes the top 10 single, “Let My Love Open The Door” – reaches #5 on Billboard’s album chart before being certified platinum. Watch it below.

On September 25th, LED ZEPPELIN drummer JOHN ‘BONZO’ BONHAM is found dead from asphyxiation following a drinking binge. In December, the band announces that ‘The loss of our dear friend...(has) led us to decide that we could not continue as we were.’ Watch this story below.

In April, SISTER SLEDGE breaks through with We Are Family. Written and produced by CHIC’s NILE RODGERS & BERNARD EDWARDS, the album features two of disco’s greatest anthems in the title track and “He’s The Greatest Dancer,” both of which reach the #1 spot on the R&B chart.

CHIC’s platinum-certified Risqué, released in July, yields the seminal #1 single, “Good Times,” later sampled by both QUEEN in “Another One Bites The Dust” and THE SUGAR HILL GANG in “Rapper’s Delight.”

Released in August, AC/DC’s Highway To Hell marks the band’s first collaboration with producer Robert John ‘Mutt’ Lange and its last recording with singer BON SCOTT.

Extensions by THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER yields their signature vocal interpretation of “Birdland,” earning them a Grammy for ‘Best Jazz Fusion Performance, Vocal or Instrumental.’

In August, LED ZEPPELIN headline two massive shows at England’s Knebworth Festival – the band’s first UK live outings in close to four years. The band also releases its eighth and final studio album, In Through The Out Door, which enters the Billboard chart at #1 – a first for a rock band. As a result of the album’s popularity, the entire LED ZEPPELIN catalogue makes the Billboard Top 200 between the weeks of October 27th and November 3rd.

North American syndicated Rock radio show InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 40th anniversary of one of Rock’s timeless classics Led Zeppelin IV. In a matter of four short years, Led Zeppelin had delivered four groundbreaking albums each destined to top the other. Widely considered a hard rock, heavy metal band by many, Zeppelin would astonish everyone by creating one of hard rock’s first epic ballads, the most played record in rock radio history, “Stairway To Heaven”. Jimmy Page shares with host Redbeard the reaction the song got, even before Zeppelin had released it.

“We were out touring and that album (Zep IV) hadn’t come out and we played "Stairway" in the Forum (Los Angeles) and we got a standing ovation.”

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant reveal In The Studio why Led Zeppelin IV is the third highest seller in music history .

“When we started the band...I wanted to make music that people would respect; your fellow musicians, like Jeff (Beck) and Eric (Clapton) and people like that,” remarks Page. Robert Plant remembers, “We did whatever we wanted to do and said, ‘look, for us we have to just weave around wherever it was most appropriate, with amplifiers, without, doesn’t matter, in the desert, on top a Welsh mountain wherever it was…’ which could be indicative and could show what we were all about.”

You'll get to see how promoting artists' products online complements the online campaigns of the digital marketers. You'll work on things like editing merchandise images, preparing banners ads for merchandise, sending email blasts, updating websites, and more!

Required Skills: Photoshop (laying out graphics, image resizing, cropping, exporting), HTML/CSS familiarity, Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).

Web Design Intern
Are you more of a visual communicator? The Digital Media Department design team is also seeking web design interns for the Spring semester of 2012! The web design interns will be working directly under the Senior Web Designer and Creative Director. Projects will include web banners, widgets, pre-order pages, splash pages, e-cards, mini sites and etc for our recording artists. The internship is guaranteed to leave you off with some real world portfolio pieces that will exist on the web! Must be passionate, outgoing, and preferably have some web experience.

Required skills: Strong Photoshop and Illustrator skills. Basic HTML/CSS is a plus!

Quality Assurance Intern
Do you have an eye for detail? Do you want to develop project management skills? This position might be for you! The QA intern's daily tasks can include running tests on artists' websites & ecommerce pages, monitoring site upgrades and helping with version control, aiding to review all complete design and development requests prior to assets being uploaded for the web, helping to analyze web analytics reports, and assist in various D2C and web production projects. This intern description may seem tedious but this position is extremely integral to the success of our digital marketing and e-commerce campaigns!

Required skills:
Highly organized with the ability to multitask and prioritize workflow in a fast-paced environment, attention to detail, excellent verbal skills, creative-minded, self-starter, understanding of ecommerce, technology and graphics design, and online marketing. Computer skills: MS Office, Photoshop beginner to mid-level user, basic Html, e-mail and other marketing tools, social marketing tools; Flash, mid-level html, video editing, audio/video compression and other technology skills a plus!

It's important for any Digital Media & E-commerce intern to be self-starting, reliable, and ready to learn new things, and ready to produce in a fast-paced environment. All applicants must be able to commit to at least 15-20 hours a week. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about a part of the music industry that is constantly growing.

Jerry Wexler: Record Man

Gerald "Jerry" Wexler was one of the most highly-regarded A&R men in popular music history. Music journalist turned music producer, Jerry was regarded as one of the major record industry players from the 1950s through the 1980s. We were lucky enough to have Jerry call Atlantic Records home.

A true visionary, Jerry coined the term "rhythm and blues", and signed and/or produced many of the biggest acts of the last 50 years, including Ray Charles, the Allman Brothers, Chris Connor, Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, Wilson Pickett, Dusty Springfield and Bob Dylan.

Intern Corner - Hamilton Park's Blogger Showcase

Hamilton Park is an R&B quartet made up of Royce P, Anthony, Mr. Marcus Lee and Chris Voice, four vocalists that hail from Atlanta. Hamilton Park was discovered by the great Mr. Andre Harrell and is the first group to sign to Harrell Records. Mr. Harrell, who is responsible for discovering the likes of some R&B and hip-hop legends such as Diddy, Mary J. Blige and Jodeci, has extreme confidence that Hamilton Park can successfully revive the idea of a talented and successful R&B group. Since being signed, Hamilton Park has been extremely busy having released their self-title EP earlier this month and touring across the country on the Scream Tour. Despite their busy schedules, the guys had time to spend a day in New York for an evening press meet and greet, here at the Atlantic offices that I had the pleasure in not only helping organize, but attending.

Although there were a few obstacles along way in the preparations of the meet and greet, including a balloon fiasco, the night turned out to be really successful and an amazing opportunity for Hamilton Park to show what they are about in an intimate setting. Bloggers and writers began to fill the red-and-black embellished 27th floor lobby around 8pm, patiently awaiting the arrival of the group. As I was getting some last minute things sorted out, I could feel the excitement and anticipation in the room. Mr. Harrell, who introduced Hamilton Park, expressed his excitement and anticipation he has for the guys and the great things he knows they can accomplish. HP returned a welcoming applause with humble gratification to everyone that had come to hear them sing a few songs and learn more about them as a musical group. Right off the bat, the guys showed that they have extremely inviting and likeable personalities. Each one of them introduced themselves to the room and dove right into a shortened acapella performance of their debut single “Thing Called Us” (which was recently graced by a guest feature from ATL’s own rapper/producer-extraordinaire Jermaine Dupri). This was followed by a second acapella performances of “Grindin’.”

Standing maybe 5 feet away from HP, I got to hear their amazing vocals live, without the aid of background music. Each of the four have a unique vocal sound, but the way their distinct voices harmonize and blend so perfectly, really blew me away. Before starting one-on-one interviews, the guys gave a little history on who they were and where they came from. They spoke about how they come from church backgrounds and the importance that God and religion has on them as a group. They touched on how excited they were for what was to come in their future and how they were grateful and appreciative for what they had accomplished thus far. HP wanted to also make sure everyone knew they were gentlemen and wanted to make sure that their “Hamilton Park Sweethearts” knew that chivalry was not dead! During their third and last a cappella performance, they serenaded a lucky female intern with their rendition of the Jodeci classic, “My Heart Belongs To You.”

There is an obvious chemistry that is present between these four not only in their vocals, but also in the way they interact with each other. There were moments during the night where they would finish each other’s thoughts and sentences, which I feel gives them a huge advantage when it comes to becoming a successful and thriving musical group. One thing I enjoyed the most about Hamilton Park was that they are super down to earth and personable. After the event was over, they took some time to take a few pictures with fans and interns that were in attendance. Myself and a few other Publicity interns even got a chance to speak with Royce P. and congratulate him on the release of their self-titled EP and get some feedback on how the Scream Tour was going. During our conversation with Royce P., I got the feeling that he was someone who was very humble, despite recent success and fame, and someone who was extremely excited for what was to come. In an industry and time where new and upcoming artists are so disposable and not as likely to really “make it,” I feel as though Hamilton Park has what it takes to truly be something great. I feel a strong connection to my hometown, hell, I grew up there and never left. I’m proud of where I come from—town, state and country. But I spend a lot of time on the road and I can see that we’re all pretty much the same.
